1. Purpose of this mini-mod
==============================================
This mod has the purpose to replace the names of the Federation's ships of the original game with more realistic names as used in the Star Trek Concordium series. It also adds correct registries for every ship.
What distinguishes my list from other lists avaible is the fact that the data is from the list used in the Concordium series. Several fandom vessels do not exist in the series and there will be no names for them. (Although I like the Eximius and the Achilles they will never be included here). Other lists have a balance between the names. 40 for the Akira, 40 for the Sovereign, 40 for the Defiant... Since Starfleet has only built 15 Sovereign Class vessels so far, there are only 13 names avaible here (Enterprise is a hero ship, Lionheart has already been destroyed) while there far more than 300 names for the Akira. If you like a little reality you are welcome to use the names, but since no one builds 300 Akiras and only 10 Sovereign you will receive many -A, -B, -C's.
Here are all vessels listed that received names and registries (in brackets is the number of names avaible for each class):
Aegian Class (none) -
Akira Class (315) fcruise1
Ambassador Class (257) -
Avenger Class (1) ?
Cargo Vessel (0) fcargo
Colony Vessel (20) fcolony
Construction Vessel (7) fconst
Defiant Class (95) fdest1
Enterprise Class (1) fente
Incursion Class (2) fincursion
Intrepid Class (63) fcruise3
Iwo Jima Class (23) fassault
Galaxy Class (29) fgalaxy
Galaxy X Class (6) -
Mining Vessel (0) ffreight
Nebula Class (277) fspecial
Norway Class (22) -
Nova Class (Equinox/Rhode Island) (35) -
Premonition Class (0) ?
Prometheus Class (3) -
Repair Vessel (0) frepair
Sabre Class (39) fdest2
Sovereign Class (13) fbattle
Steamrunner Class (50) fcruise2
Venture Class (41) fscout

CA - Assault Cruiser
CR - (Medium) Cruiser
CL - Patrol Cruiser
DD - Destroyer

"U.S.S. Argus NCC-80239"
This should be done for every class in the game.
==============================================
3. Where are the names from
==============================================
General:
All ships that appeared ever in the series (excl. Enterprise) are used in this list (some are already destroyed though, so you wont ever see them). A few names are from other Star Trek games (SFC, BC, BOTF). Several names are from RPG-ships on the web, like Visigoth, Lionheart, Galahead; thanks for them. (I destroyed the Lionheart before I made it a Sovereign, it was supposed to be an Akira.)
Self made names:
I started compiling a vessel list for Concordium in 2000 and since then I collected more than 2300 names for nearly 50 classes. The first thing to use is a good dictionary and several '5000 words sites' on the net. However some of the classes (or at least the initial production batches) have a motto.
Akira Class
The first twelve vessels of the Akira class were japanese warships of WWIII. Akira herself was the first allied vessel that fired a nuclear tipped land attack missile in the war (that was in 2047).
Colony Vessel
Except Yorktown, Temple and Parthenon all names have a relation to terraforming and colonization.
Construction Vessel
What would fit better than naming them for the seven wonders of the world.
Incursion Class
All three vessels have names pointing to their stealth nature.
Intrepid Class
While Intrepid and Galice are just names the following six are names for famous explorers.
Iwo Jima Class
All vessels are named for cities on earth. Istanbul and London class were named in the same series.
Norway Class
All names have a relation to diplomacy. Places for conferences, diplomats and ambassadors, european peoples from the migration and ancient cities.
Nova Class (Equinox/Rhode Island)
Besides Harry's ship all are related to astronomy.
Prometheus Class
All three are greek heroes.
Sabre Class
The first eighteen are named for blade weapons.
Steamrunner Class
Besides a few exceptions they are named for warships all over the world.
Venture Class
Only the nullship received a name, the others are numbered sequentially.
The hints:
Leutner and Winters are friends of mine
Costron was a teacher I knew
Shiraz is named for Cmdr. Harijans birthplace
Metallica, Genesis and Nirvana are quite obvious
Akira Toriyama is named for the japanese cartoon artist
Bombardier, Douglas and Embraer are named for the aircraft constructors
Colt and Ruger are quite obvious
Coruscant is Emperor Palpatines... whoops, wrong movie
De Niro is named for Robert De Niro
Several NATO names for soviet equipment are also included
and many more...
The error:
The Bright Star class vessel Pride Leader should be Proud Leader. I used the name for nearly three years before someone pointed out that its wrong. (You may have guessed, my mother tongue is not english.) I have kept Pride, but changed the origin of the name. Its no longer a proud leader, it comes now from an Andorian proverb ("... pride, leader ...").
==============================================
4. Armada II and the real Starfleet
==============================================
As mentioned above, this mod will produce many -A, -B, -C's. This is due to the fact that the numbers used are as realistic as I can make them. I have worked months to create a organisatorial structure for Starfleet with areas of responsibility, fleet groups, command structures, fleetyards... Most of it is far away from what we have heard/seen on the show but more realistic.
Age of the fleet:
The first appearance of the Excelsior class was in THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK in 2385. 94 years later, in NEMESIS we saw the U.S.S. Archer, that is generally accepted as Excelsior class. No wonder if Starfleet would have lost against the Dominion when 1/3 of the fleet are Excelsiors, Mirandas and Oberths. Besides the Tiberius and London classes there are no members of the Excelsior family in use for science/tactical duties after 2378. The oldest vessel for science/tactical duties in 2381 is USS Prototype, built in 2334.
Battleships:
Sisko said that the Defiant was Starfleets first warship... never heard such a crap. Battles with the Cardassians, the Kzinti and the Hydrans where the reason for the introduction of the Akira class. The Akira is a tactical vessel that can perform general scientific duties. Because the Akira is efficient and effordable she is still built in large numbers. The Sovereign was the answer to the Borg threat. It can perform nearly no scientific duties but she is nearly indestructable. With very limited capabilities and a high price (twice as an Akira) only fourteen are constructed evenly divided between the fleets and commands.
Auxiliary and special missions:
Dozens of ships were destroyed when the allied powers attacked the weapons platforms over Cardassia. The standard torpedo has a max range of 3.5 million kms, far away from the platforms beam weapons. Cloaked long range missiles (soviet AS-4s striking a US CVBG, you ever played Harpoon?) would reduce the threat to any allied ship... but that would be less action in the show... And what's about command ships, minelayers, unreps, ....
The result:
Starfleet is a cruiser fleet. The classes Alliance, Ambassador and Nebula making up for nearly 50 percent of the fleet; Ambassador and Nebula are designated science ships (CAN). Starfleet currently only has 63 battleships; 2 of them are experimental, 12 are special command ships, 29 are Bright Star.
As soon as battleships are avaible to build everybody hits their button until the end of all times. I would like to use latinum as a correction factor (45 units for a Alliance, 1011 for a Sovereign). While I like the large number of classes avaible in the end the only useable are the Sovereign and the Steamrunner.
